Piratespeak

Friday is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, but for those of us in the audience who are more familiar with the language of the hood than that of the high seas there is an ongoing effort to translate between the two:
| Gangster | Pirate |
| fo'ties | bottles o' rum |
| bling bling | booty | Yo! | Avast! |
| Homey | Matey |
| Word | Arrrrrrr |
| Beat down | Keel haul |
Feel free to suggest more..
I should mention here that we have this IRC bot at the office named Admiral Benbow who periodically spouts off Captain McAllister quotes (and others) like:
<benbow> Arrr, sometimes I wonder why I bother plunderin' at all.
<benbow> Hi, I can't answer right now because I'm out looting and pillaging.
<benbow> Remember, in a pirate ship, in pirate waters, in a pirate world, ask no questions. Believe only what you see. No, believe half of what you see.

The Washington Post article is funny as hell. "Baur and Summers came up with this idea a few years ago. They were playing racquetball, and, as so often happens, they began talking like pirates." Posted by: ryan at September 17, 2003 1:03 PM |
