The GM Hot Button

Maybe you have seen the GM commercials for the Hot Button contest. Basically you go to a GM dealership showroom, hop in a car and press the OnStar button to see if you win. Over the next few months they will be giving away 1000 GM vehicles. Here is the interesting fact:
Odds of winning: Total approximate number of game plays available is 5,500,000. Total prizes: 1000. Odds of winning: Approximately 1:5,500.
Compared to most contests (like the lottery), these are amazingly good odds for the size of prize involved.
Looking at the math there is about $12,143,220 worth of cars being given away which breaks down to an average of $12,143 per prize. At 5,500,000 plays, GM is paying $2.20 for each person they bring into the showroom. Of course this doesn't take in account the true cost of a vehicle to GM and the cost of advertising.
GM paid nothing for this advertisement.

Out of 1000 prizes, they are giving away 625 less-than-$10k Chevrolets, and two $50k Hummers. Honestly, I can't say which I would rather be seen driving. "Average vehicle cost based on all available prizes is $28,000. Total MSRP of all available prizes: $28,000,000." Still, if multiple entries were allowed combined with the pretty good odds I would find a polynomial time solution to the Traveling Salesman problem and hit the road. GM must be using the "new math". Posted by: ryan at January 11, 2004 5:54 PM |

The pro-h2 letters on that fuh2 are classic. "I myself am considering purchasing a Hummer H2, because of what it stands for: Freedom to buy what I want and pay for whatever excessive fuel economy I want in a vehicle." Posted by: ryan at January 11, 2004 6:14 PM |

Maybe they accidently left out the amazing $16 million cash prize they're also giving out to one lucky winner. Posted by: agent1073 at January 11, 2004 9:36 PM |

My parents actually won a car from this contest today, a 35,000 dollar GMC Envoy XUV. Nice. Posted by: Paula at January 31, 2004 8:33 PM |

I won, too. A Caddy Deville. Now, it stickers for 47,715. I'll get a 1099 on that, so that means I'll owe $12,000 in income taxes. Then I get to pay 8% in sales tax. . . around $3,800 on it whether I ever drive it or not. Assuming I can get the dealer to offer me $40,000 to trade it to them for something else and a check, I'm left with around $24,000. That out to buy me a nice little Subaru or something. Eh, well, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Posted by: Herself at March 3, 2004 3:48 PM |

I was one of the lucky winners in the GM Hot Button second Chance drawing. I wrote my name, address, and phone number on a 3x5 paper and mailed in a total of 110 entries. 2 or 3 a day for 8 weeks. My prize was a 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer valued at $31,580. Not bad for spending about $40 in postage stamps. The first auto I ever won. THANKS GM!
