crosswalk buttons... mechanical placebos

According to this article in the Times, over 2500 of New York City's 3250 crosswalk buttons are inoperable, and have been for some time.
"Most of the buttons scattered through the city, mainly outside of Manhattan, are relics of the 1970's, before computers began tightly choreographing traffic signal patterns on major arteries."
I've been wondering about this for some time, and actually have always argued that crosswalk buttons must work. This news has shattered everything I know.

It would be funnier if they installed new yet non-functioning buttons. In fact, that might be a fun thing to do, place a silly looking button on a pole and see how many people depress it. Posted by: agent1073 at February 29, 2004 1:22 AM |
