NY’s Solar-Powered, Litter-Compacting Trash Can
Posted by tomo at 10:37 AM in urban . | 1 Comments
Up to 300 gallons of waste--or four-to-ten times the amount held by the average bin--can be housed in the BigBelly at a time. As a result, up to 75% less collection trips are needed by sanitation workers and their heavily polluting diesel trucks.
A win for both the budgets and environments of cities, if only they can get the $4,500 per unit pricetag down. Minimum orders of one million?

My old apartment in Columbus had a trash compacting dumpster. Not nearly as small and definitely not solar powered. However it boasted some of the same advantages: less need for pick up and also more sanitary. The dumpster wouldn't get all full at the end of the week and then have trash sitting around it like most dumpsters. I liked putting really large things in it to hear it smash them. Scary thing is, you locked it from the outside so if someone was to push you in and lock the door... Posted by: ryan at April 6, 2005 11:37 AM |
